Live recording of 90th Birthday song for Nelson Mandela in the Jacaranda 94.2 music radio station studios in Midrand, South Africa. What made the shoot challenging and quite a feat, is the fact that four of South Africa’s top solo artists agreed (at 24 hours’ notice) to come to the studio and record a song they had never rehearsed or heard before. The song was hastily written by the Jacaranda 94.2 breakfast production team, including Dean Konidaris, who is featured on this footage recording the song. It happened in a single evening session for Kurt Darren, Tasha Baxter and Craig Hinds. Danny K laid down his voice tracks the next morning at 5:30am! Tasha recorded no less than 6 different voice tracks to add depth to the song. Watershed lead singer Craig Hinds faced the biggest challenge, as the song stretched his vocal capacity both at the top and the bottom of his range. But we got through it and the final mix of the song was played live on Just Plain Breakfast with Darren Scott, less than two hours after Danny K finished his part of the recording. The video had to be produced with the same haste (approx 2 hours for edit, final mix, conversion and upload) and in very cramped production studio conditions. It was a one-woman shoot from start to finish and soundtrack synch without timecode proved to be a horror. Despite this it was a fabulous collaboration which made it in time for the morning of Nelson Mandelas 90th Birthday on 18 July 2008. The video was uploaded to the
